“Taro Daniel is no stranger to rising to the occasion against quality opponents.” Coming into this match, Daniel had a career 4-25 record in completed matches against top-100 opponents on hardcourts. Against the top 50 that slips to 1-11 before today, and 0-7 vs top-20 on all surfaces (an eyewatering 2-19 in sets!). For even post-surgery Djokovic to lose to someone with that kind of record against the top 100 – well, it’s pretty staggering.

I’d also like to draw attention to his inability to serve out the opening set, having failed to take set points in the previous return game – and then lose the ensuing breaker. Uncharacteristic mental lapses?

But…around this time last year, Federer returned from a post-AO break and lost a similar 3-set match against Evgeny Donskoy in Dubai. He ended up having a few decent months of form afterwards…
