Ivo Karlovic went out meekly 6-4, 6-4, to Adrian Mannarino, who had surprising success returning his opponent’s serve.
Elsewhere, Kimiko Date-Krumm lost in straights to Anna Tatishvili, hampered by a foot injury which she received treatment for in the second set.
Steve Johnson wasn’t pleased as he lost in three sets to qualifying wild card Mackenzie McDonald, an 18-year-old who had never made an ATP main draw before.
Michael Russell took the first set against Benjamin Becker in a tiebreak, but lost in three.
